Scientists discover a microorganism consuming the Sun’s energy. Within decades, the resulting dimming will cause global crop failure and the deaths of most of humanity. The only viable plan, Project Hail Mary, is a one-way mission to a distant star system where the organism appears not to be spreading. The crew will not return. Rainiel, a molecular biologist whose research is central to understanding the organism, is one of the five people with both the necessary expertise and the required physiological trait to survive the mission.

The African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a 25-year-old US trade pact providing Sub-Saharan countries duty free access to the US market for a variety of products such as textiles, agricultural goods, and manufactured tools. African exports under AGOA totaled nearly $10 billion and covers around 7000 different products from more than 30 countries. To be eligible for AGOA, countries must uphold democratic principles, establish market-based economies and not engage in activities that threaten US national security. AGOA has recently been extended until December with the US Senate pushing for another extension until 2028.

This has been met with domestic criticism including from De Beers which currently controls a majority of Botswana’s diamond sales.
