    The African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) is a 25-year-old US trade pact providing Sub-Saharan countries duty free access to the US market for a variety of products such as textiles, agricultural goods, and manufactured tools. African exports under AGOA totaled nearly $10 billion and covers around 7000 different products from more than 30 countries. To be eligible for AGOA, countries must uphold democratic principles, establish market-based economies and not engage in activities that threaten US national security. AGOA has recently been extended until December with the US Senate pushing for another extension until 2028.

    Botsawana is the world’s largest diamond producer by value which makes up around 80% of its exports. A recent prolonged market downturn has cut diamond production and sales which triggered layoffs and shrunk the economy. Botswana has announced that it would open an embassy in Moscow seeking Russian investment in diamond and other rare earth mineral mining in the country. This has been met with domestic criticism including from De Beers which currently controls a majority of Botswana’s diamond sales.
