Motions

7th Iloilo Intervarsity

Round 1

  1. Culture

This House Supports the Rise of Solo Culture in developing countries

Solo Culture refers to a social shift where individuals prioritize singlehood, solo living and independent lifestyle choices over romantic coupling, early marriage and communal cohabitation

Round 2

  1. Environment

TH, as the Philippine environmental movement, would actively oppose the exploration and development of Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1)

The Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project has discovered a major new natural gas reservoir, Malampaya East-1 (MAE-1), offshore Palawan. Driven by a consortium of Prime Energy, UC 38 LLC, and PNOC-EC, the discovery is projected to generate roughly 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, significantly boosting national energy reserves.

Round 3

  1. Religion

TH prefers a world where pantheism is the dominant belief system

Pantheism is the philosophical worldview that the universe, nature, and the divine are fundamentally one and the same. Rather than viewing God as a separate, personal creator existing outside the cosmos, pantheism holds that divinity is immanent within all physical reality, natural laws, and living things.

Round 4

  1. China

This house predicts that China-Philippines relations will worsen within the next 50 years

Quarterfinals

  1. Economics

TH, as the United Kingdom, Would strongly tie its industrial strategy to the European Union's "Made in Europe" policy

The "Made in Europe" initiative proposed under the European Union's Industrial Accelerator Act aims to protect European manufacturing by setting local-content preferences, subsidies, and public procurement quotas for strategic industries (such as automotive, net-zero tech, and steel). Following the post-Brexit trade "reset," the UK faces a choice between aligning with EU industrial policy to protect integrated supply chains or maintaining independent trade rules.

Semifinals

  1. Medicine

THBT the off-label expansion of GLP-1 treatments to children under 12 will do more harm than good

GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as semaglutide and liraglutide) are injectable medications used to manage blood sugar and chronic obesity. While regulatory agencies internationally have approved these drugs primarily for adults and adolescents aged 12 and older, pediatricians are increasingly prescribing them off-label to children aged 6 to 11 facing severe metabolic complications. Although early clinical trials show significant weight-loss efficacy, long-term developmental impacts remain under-studied, with research centers in countries like Germany and Austria only recently initiating pediatric long-term studies.

Grand Final

  1. Fisheries

THBT the implementation of Closed Fishing Seasons in the Philippines has done more harm than good

A Closed Fishing Season is a conservation policy enforced by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) that bans specific fishing gears and harvesting activities in designated Philippine waters during peak spawning months to allow fish stocks to regenerate. For example, in the Visayan Sea, a seasonal ban on catching sardines, mackerel, and herring is enforced from November 15 to February 15. Violators face administrative fines, confiscation of gear, and potential imprisonment under the Philippine Fisheries Code.

Novice Pre-Grand Final

  1. Justice

This House Prefers a world where the Philippines prioritizes restorative justice rather than retributive justice

Retributive justice focuses on imposing proportional punishment on offenders for wrongdoing to deliver justice, maintain public safety, and deter crime. Restorative justice as emphasized in jurisdictions like Norway, Finland, and New Zealand prioritizes repairing harm to victims and communities through mediation, rehabilitation, and restitution. Currently, the Philippines operates primarily under a retributive legal framework where it is facing various systemic challenges.

Novice Grand Final

  1. Philippines

This House prefers an Archipelagic model over a continental model of statehood in building a shared Filipino national identity

The Continental model of statehood and national identity is built around fixed land-centric borders, a centralized mainland core, and territorial continuity. The Archipelagic model of statehood and national identity is built around decentralized island networks and a shared maritime heritage, viewing the sea not as a barrier that divides, but as a space that connects.

High School Grand Final

  1. Education

This House Regrets the rise of gamified learning applications (i.e. Duolingo, Kahoot, and reward-based ed-tech) in primary education
