In the Loki series, the Time Variance Authority (TVA) enforces a singular "Sacred Timeline" managed by He Who Remains. Any time an individual makes a choice that deviates from the predetermined cosmic path (creating a "nexus event"), a new branch timeline is born. If left unchecked, these branches multiply infinitely, eventually colliding with one another and sparking a multiversal war that threatens all reality. To prevent total cosmic annihilation, the TVA prunes these branching realities at their inception, erasing entire timeline variants to preserve the singular, deterministic flow of the Sacred Timeline.

Liway is a middle-class Filipino woman who dreams of becoming a journalist to uncover the atrocities of Martial Law and become a central figure in the resistance. At present, she has had to postpone that dream in the midst of the state's accelerating aggression toward journalism. She only knows that there are growing rumors of resistance to the regime, but no indication that these movements will actually succeed. A button is presented to her with a singular effect: if she presses it, all of the dreams she cannot realistically achieve under her present circumstances will be erased from her mind. She will no longer remember, desire, or be haunted by her dream of becoming a journalist and writing freely about the government, and she will also lose the possibility of continuing to hope for it. This is the only time that the button will be available, and she has to decide now.
